But first, it should be said that I absolutely love being a mother - much more than I ever thought I would. It challenges me, exhausts me, intimidates me, fulfills me, and gives me the greatest satisfaction of anything I have ever done. And Gordon is a joy. He is a great baby and I couldn't imagine loving any child more than I love him.<br />
<br />
Finding out Gordon was deaf was the most devastating moment of my life. I can still walk through the events of that day like it was yesterday - what I was wearing, people I talked to, what I ate. The diagnosis was a process although I knew something was wrong from the very beginning. I am grateful for the wonderful 24 hours that we had with Gordon before the first red flag was raised. Before anyone suspected something was wrong. In the past 10-15 years, most states in the USA have adopted legislation that mandates hearing screening for all infants. This typically happens for a baby in the middle of the night while the mom is asleep. The baby is wheeled back into the room with a cute certificate that says "I Passed" blah blah blah. When they took Gordon for his test, it was 2:00 am and I was awake, staring at my new baby boy. So, I went along. And I watched him fail his first ever hearing test. OAE (otoacoustic emission) testing is not always accurate and the audiology tech reassured me that we could try it again the next day, to be sure to get it right, and he wouldn't have a problem for sure. "I've never had a baby that didn't pass" she said. So, the next day before discharge, we tried again with the same technician. Again, Gordon failed. The attending physician on duty that morning told me not to worry and that 4% of babies fail but then 8-9 out of 10 pass later. But, seeing the worry on my face, she called the audiologist who was so much more reliable, to test him once more before we left. Again, he failed. Leaving the hospital, I knew. I knew something was wrong. We had another OAE scheduled for a week later because most of the time the baby will pass once the vernix in the ear dissolves. My dad came over that night to give Gordon a blessing, but I knew. The next week, I tested Gordon's hearing myself over and over, clapping near him, making loud noises in his room, etc. He never looked, never raised an eyebrow, opened his eyes, startled, or made any indication that he could hear. <br />
<br />
A week later, we repeated his OAE back at the Hospital. Again we met the same audiologist. Again we got the same result. Fail. I could see her concern all over her face. She had us schedule an ABR (auditory brainstem response) test for a few days later. This test actually measures the brain activity in response to sound. We showed up that day, Gordon was 10 days old, and she took us into her small, dark room. Gordon was sound asleep as they attached the little electrodes to his sweet head. I then sat there, weeping, as the audiologist got "no response" after "no response". For over an hour she tested him. She then sat in front of us and told us that our child had a profound sensorineural hearing loss. He would never hear. My grief was indescribable. I didn't even know what it meant, but I knew my hopes and dreams for my child were changed forever. My airplane just redirected from Italy to Holland. (http://www.our-kids.org/archives/Holland.html)<br />
<br />
The very next day, my mother and father were to be set apart as mission presidents and were going to be entering the MTC a day later. Looking back, it was kind of an out of body....week. I knew I was going through the motions, but I felt like I was watching it all from somewhere else. I was trying to love this new deaf baby that I had, mourn the loss of the hearing baby I thought I would have, say goodbye to my parents for 3 years, figure out how to be a mother to a newborn, and keep living. It was the hardest time of my life. I cried at the drop of a hat. Poor Gavin. I was kind of a disaster. At the time, it seemed like the worst timing for everything to be happening. But, all of my siblings came into town for my parent's setting apart, and they were also there for our diagnosis which was more of a blessing to me than I realized. We had many sweet moments together and I've never felt so much of their love.<br />
<br />
So, we plowed through. It felt like we were seeing doctors/audiologists constantly. He was evaluated by everyone who came to see him, which did (and still does) bother me, although I'm much less sensitive about it than I was before. The weeks went by, Gordon continued to grow and develop like any baby and I learned more and more about what we were dealing with. The state department of health got us started in the Parent Infant Program for deaf and hard of hearing children. Our audiologist fitted him for hearing aids and we still fight a daily battle to keep them in. Also, for months and months we were on pins and needles because we didn't know if he would be a cochlear implant candidate or not. His MRI seemed like it would never come. I felt like we were making decisions on his behalf every day that would affect his life completely going forward. I couldn't have made it without Gavin, who took a different approach to coping than I did, but who was a bright shining light in my dark world. Gavin kept my head above water.<br />
<br />
Parenting a baby that can't hear is HARD, and not always in ways you'd think. Gordon would SCREAM in the car, 100% of the time. Not just cry or whimper, but wail. I would just cry in the front seat knowing that there was nothing I could say to calm him down until we got where we were going. I really had to build up the motivation to go anywhere since it was always a struggle. I had no way that I could let him know that I was there with him, aside from pulling over, which I had to do from time to time. I still can't call his name to get his attention to look at a book or toy, although we are getting better at alternative attention getters. When someone comes into the room and wants to say hi to him, we have to motion to him or even physically lift him to get the person in his field of vision. TV and movies have absolutely no meaning to him, which means very little, if any, screen time. Things are just different and because I hear, sometimes it is unnatural to me that he doesn't respond a certain way. I often felt a little resentment and a lot of jealousy any time I heard anyone complain about something their hearing child was doing. In my head I would always think, "At least they can hear you." I still sing to Gordon every night before bed, and although I wish every day he could hear me, it doesn't sting like it first did. I don't think I'm getting calloused, just better.<br />
<br />
Gordon is progressing beautifully. He makes wonderful vocalizations and it seems like he can hear the low frequency vowel sounds (ah, oh, uh, etc) and copies us all the time. He never makes a repeated consonant sound like ba ba ba or da da da since consonants are higher frequency sounds that he largely cannot hear. I dream of the day when I hear him say ma ma - something that most kiddos have done by 7 months. <br />
<br />
But, one day, he will say that. Gordon had an MRI in February, which showed that his head looks perfect like any other kid's head. All the structures are there, and he appears to be a perfect cochlear implant candidate. We are beyond relieved that we are going to be able to give him the option of a hearing life, although this also means that our problem is likely genetic and all of our children will face a 25% chance of being born deaf. Gordon is going to be able to go to mainstream schools, learn an instrument, play on regular sports teams, serve any mission, and have a successful life. But it won't be without a lot of work. Amazingly, children who get this done at such a young age are basically caught up with their peers by the time they turn 3 years old, which still blows me away. We can't wait to get it done shortly after he turns 1. <br />
<br />
We now are having therapy 2-3 days a week formally, but the therapy goes on all day every day at home. I feel the pressure of his success resting on my shoulders, and it scares me. I feel unequal to the task, but am grateful it's mine. Gordon is already a blessing in our home and it's a privilege to be his mother. He is happy in his quiet life, and I can only imagine how complete his world will become once he has full access to sound.<br />
<br />
I've received amazing support from everyone around me, especially our families. I also feel like I've been inducted into a special society for parents of children with special needs and any time I come across a parent of a special needs child, I automatically feel like we're friends. I hate to be exclusive about it, but there really is no way to know what it's like unless you're in. It's a club that no one really wants to be in, and yet, it's nice to know you're not alone. <br />
<br />
Every day has hard moments and I'm sure there will be even more to come. But I know Gordon can do it, and (most days) I think I can too.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, it's been 9 months since Gordon was born, and I finally jumped on a scale the other day at work. Needless to say, I left with some new motivation to get back in shape. Especially now that I'm finally done nursing, I have more freedom to work out harder without the fear of getting to dehydrated or anything else that may cause my milk supply to dwindle. (Too much info?) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyway, I decided the best time to work out was during Gordon's morning nap since the weather is still iffy and I can't always get out for an afternoon run. I have never done a workout video religiously, although most of my family have done The Firm for more years than I can count, so I decided to find a basic looking 45 minute routine. Jillian Michaels fit the bill. It's hilarious, and also really hard. I'm loving it so far, which is probably the most surprising part, but I have a feeling I'm going to get bored. I'm looking for another video to mix it up a little. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm really hoping this new routine will help me get ready for my marathon coming up in a few months....ha ha ha.</div>

The air finally cleared and we couldn't wait to get outside to enjoy it. We took a quick hike up near Emigration Canyon. It was lovely. In my opinion, on a clear day, there isn't a more beautiful city in the world.</div>

Gordon's first Christmas was fantastic. We woke up early and hiked an incredible hike to the top of Koko Head, which was a great way to start the day. <br />

Being away from home, we had a very simple Christmas. The trip was a gift in itself. But, Gordon couldn't have a christmas without any presents. Wish I had known that all I had to do was put a bow on a ball of wrapping paper and he would be a happy boy. </div>

This was on Waikiki Beach. Gordon was so easy to take along and would just nap on the beach. It was so pleasant.<br />

The morning we left was so sad for me. I can't express how wonderful it was to be with my mother. Outside their house they have a plumeria tree which drops incredible fragrant flowers every day. I loved to go out and collect them and couldn't get over the fact that there are trees in the world that shed flowers. The morning we left, I left one for each of us in our bedroom for my mother to find. Just a little kiss from each of us. <br />

We are headed back this summer and honestly cannot wait.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01234037023121328792noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-284637002268330558.post-9266097594008358852014-02-03T08:54:00.001-08:002014-02-03T09:00:21.701-08:00Hawaii, 2013 (part 1)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are few things that rival a trip to a warm location in the dead of winter. Taking time off to go to Hawaii for Christmas was probably the greatest thing we have ever done. It was a fantastic trip. Spending time with my parents was the best part for me, but enjoying the warm climate was also pretty great. I will have to do a follow-up post in a few days with the pictures from my phone, which I cannot seem to get on to my computer. But this can get us started. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We absolutely loved the mission home and playing in the pool there. We all swam every day and then Gavin and I would swim while Gordon was napping. Lovely. Gordon particularly loved riding on my dad's pool floatie. </div>

We tried to get one outing in each day, whether it was going to a beach or on a hike. Our first hike was up to the lighthouse on the South East end of the island. It was hot, but we had a good time. <br />

Gordon is a beach baby. He loved the sand (well, eating it), loved the people, and loved dipping his toes in the water. Swimming has to be his favorite activity, whether in the tub, the pool, or the ocean. <br />

We've since run a few marathons and now are settling into the fat of summer. We had a very busy Winter and Spring. First, we ran several races. We started with the St. George Half Marathon and also ran the Dam2Dam 10-miler in St. George. Fun races. </div>

We love St. George in the winter.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We then headed to Catalina Island in March for the Catalina Island Marathon. This is such a beautiful island, and although I have stared at it from the beaches of Newport, I had never set foot there. It was a really fun weekend. The marathon was the most difficult 26.2 I've ever run. The elevation changes made for wicked hills, both up and down. We finished in 5 hours, and were definitely in the middle of the pack. We had beautiful weather and enjoyed every minute of the trip!</div>

I threw a celebration party for Gavin as he broke his 10-year streak of NO CAFFEINE. Seriously, he did it. We ordered the limited edition Dublin Dr. Pepper in glass bottles (as well as about 60 more sodas in glass bottles made of only cane sugar) to be his first sip. It did not disappoint.</div>

We backpacked the Na Pali coast to Kalalau Beach for 3 days of our honeymoon. It was such a great hike and an incredible experience. The only way to Kalalau is by helicopter, boat (when the tide is low) or by foot. We chose by foot, but by the time we were coming out, I wish we had chose the helicopter!<br />

When we got to the beach, the waves were SO huge, it wasn't safe to swim. But they were something to see. 30 ft. swells at least!<br />

Now that fall is coming I'm sad to see summer end. It's been very fun, with one trip after another. I'm 8 days away from St. George Marathon, I broke my finger...and I think that's about it. I'll be better about staying updated. School Stress. I am heading into my last finals week of my life. That's right, last one ever. To help me overcome my lack of motivation, I keep reminding myself that I am one large exam and one large thesis away from my degree. </div><div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Lwbjkg1DYAzENZB6HcwDq6g3P3eMCg9Dy09gdpl2mwgpTSQJB15ifB_59pkDbWmhsxDgbrzmF7WoClGfOQR8KtnxGwNOewtrBb-bEFS6oJ32VfHsxPE8mMEUppHIKXrejq9BLQu3hrw/s1600/stress1.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Lwbjkg1DYAzENZB6HcwDq6g3P3eMCg9Dy09gdpl2mwgpTSQJB15ifB_59pkDbWmhsxDgbrzmF7WoClGfOQR8KtnxGwNOewtrBb-bEFS6oJ32VfHsxPE8mMEUppHIKXrejq9BLQu3hrw/s320/stress1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600011287698474178" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">2. Job Stress. I have to find a real job. A real, full-time, benefitted, 8-5, M-F, grown-up job. Unfortunately, the market is less than fruitful these days, and there aren't a ton of opportunities for dietitians in the state of Utah. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">3. Stress fracture. In my tibia. Yep. That's what I get for running on bad shoes through shin splints. This is not an image of my tibia, but it is in about the same place. I have always loved Easter. It's easily one of my favorite holidays. Aside from the real reason we celebrate Easter, it could be because I love the seasonal candy, it could be dying eggs... Regardless, I love it. </div><div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEn4-yoUgknyUwT9w5oqJ9536shAKpHgkPnQSifUU1HOJ-ltNfu7YUsQl3tT69kDbCch3VPQI-h7TuY-UX_vaYALDCb0QGepdPF1rUQXoEVZI6XrIdebtouGAgn2Pl_4A1fasyYY2bIKU/s1600/IMG_0712.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEn4-yoUgknyUwT9w5oqJ9536shAKpHgkPnQSifUU1HOJ-ltNfu7YUsQl3tT69kDbCch3VPQI-h7TuY-UX_vaYALDCb0QGepdPF1rUQXoEVZI6XrIdebtouGAgn2Pl_4A1fasyYY2bIKU/s320/IMG_0712.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599333205913161298" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">As an adult still living in my parents' home, I kind of just assume every year that the Easter Bunny just isn't going to come. And every year, he manages to make it by the house. I end up telling myself that as a 25-year-old (and my brother as a 27-year-old), we've just outgrown him. But mostly I do this in order to prepare myself for the grim Easter morning when I will in fact wake up and there really is no basket waiting for me. </div><div style="text-align: center;">It will be a sad day. </div><div style="text-align: center;">This year, with the help of a very obliging date, I figured I could still indulge my childhood tradition and dye eggs, just in case this is THE year that he forgets the Warner kids. I kind of hesitate to do this, but I'm going to anyway. <div><br /></div><div>I overhear or am included in conversations dealing with nutrition (outside of school) basically every day. I love it. Seriously. However, there is one topic that has come up multiple times recently, and although I refrain from bursting bubbles face to face, I need to get it out now. </div><div><br /></div><div>A long time ago, someone (my theory is that it was the Florida orange people...) decided that they were going to tout oranges and citrus as being immune-boosting due to the vitamin C content. And boy did they score with that one. With zero scientific evidence to back it up, the masses bought it hook, line, and sinker. Then, as if that wasn't enough, some school teacher in California came up with Airborne which has taken off as a popular "immune-supportive" supplement, including but not limited to megadoses of vitamin C and zinc. Awesome. Since then, multiple other products have emerged (Emergen-C, etc) that continue to promote this association between resisting/fighting a cold and vitamin C. </div><div><br /></div><div>Okay. Here's the real deal with vitamin C. Vitamin C (aka: ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant. Simply, it serves as an electron donor to reduce free radical content in the body. The theory behind this is that we inherently have endogenous free radicals in our bodies all the time, but we also have endogenous means of dealing with these free radicals, keeping our bodies in a reactive oxygen species homeostasis of sorts. The problem is that just by doing anything, including breathing, exercising, smoking, or being in the sun, we exogenously increase our free radicals. Bummer. However, we have also exogenous means of combating that as well. Enter: Antioxidants! So, vitamin C is important for reducing free radicals in the body. In addition, we know that vitamin C plays a role in several reactions that occur in the body, namely iron absorption, collagen synthesis (which keeps our teeth in our mouths- a discovery which contributed to the connection of vitamin C to scurvy) synthesis of neurotransmitters, fatty acid utilization, etc. </div><div><br /></div><div>There is no evidence that supports the idea that taking lots and lots of vitamin C will help you fight a cold. None. Sorry. </div><div><br /></div><div>I should also mention that taking large doses (We're talking about anything over 500 mg/day here... ) of vitamin C is a huge waste of money and potentially bad for several reasons. 1) The more you take, the less is absorbed. Anything you don't absorb will simply be excreted as waste. 2) Many of the vitamin C supplements come with zinc too. Zinc inhibits absorption of vitamin C. 3) There is also something called renal threshold, which means that when you exceed a certain point in the body, excess vitamin C will be filtered out in the urine, and flushed. 4) A byproduct of vitamin C metabolism has been linked (again, this lacks sufficient scientific backing) to development of kidney stones. 5) Megadoses of vitamin C are thought to be PRO-oxidative, actually contributing to free radical content in the body. This is still being researched, but is generally supported at this point. </div><div><br /></div><div>Adult men need 90mg/day and women need 75 mg/day of vitamin C. There is an upper tolerable limit (which is the amount that shouldn't be exceeded without experiencing side effects, in this case diarrhea) of 2000 mg/day. A good goal to shoot for is somewhere around 200 mg/day. This is easily achieved through the diet as long as it includes a variety of fruits and vegetables. </div><div><br /></div><div>The bottom line here is that supplementing with vitamin C probably isn't going to hurt you as long as you're not exceeding by too much the 500 mg mark. If you think it helps you out, by all means, go for it. But there are a lot of misconceptions/myths about vitamin C, and after refraining from telling people to their face that they're flushing money down the toilet (literally), I needed to get it out. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4
